Randomness

I know a lot of my blog entries begin with me begging for your forgiveness – this one is no exception.  When I was asked if I wanted to be the staff blogger I was so excited for this opportunity.  I still am. But I had no idea how my GW work would get in the way of me being able to write on a regular basis.  So here I go, again. I’m sorry for my infrequency.

Last time I wrote I had just come back from many, many weeks of travel and was gearing up for reading of Early Decision 1 applications (which is what I am doing these days).  Before I could get into reading file mode - which means comfy clothes, plenty of snacks (I prefer sweets), and good music to listen to while I read hour upon hour – I had a big GW Interview Weekend to plan. (There I go again with yet another reason why the blog hasn’t been written in 3 weeks.  Good thing my performance review isn’t based on my blog entries or I would be in TROUBLE!)  Oh, and don’t forget Thanksgiving!!

But back to what’s happening in admissions at GW these days (and why my entry is late).

I and all of my GW colleagues have our eyes glued to computer screens.  At GW, all applications are read online.  We are not entirely paperless but we’re getting there.  Reading online took some getting used to but now that we’ve been doing it for close to 6 years (maybe 7, I can’t recall), we can’t imagine dealing with 3-D files again.  No more coffee stains left on transcripts or the dreaded paper cuts!  Reading this way allows us to read applications from anywhere we have Internet access.  So if I’m called away from my home office during reading season, I can still read files in my hotel room.  It also means the work never stops because even if we are snowed in we can still get to work and read files.

I’ve enjoyed the files I have read so far and man, oh, man are my applicants smart!!  Early Decision applicants are always so enthusiastic. I guess it goes with the territory – they apply early because they know GW is their IT school.  Sometimes I get goose bumps reading their Why GW essays.  So much Buff & Blue Pride!!

Speaking of Buff & Blue Pride and the fact that Something Happens Here – did you see the email we sent to you high school seniors about who was on campus yesterday for Worlds Aids Day? None other than President Obama, Bono, Sanjay Gupta, Alicia Keys and via satellite former president Bush, former president Clinton, and Elton John all to discuss the ending of the AIDS pandemic.  Here you can read all about it!

I know this ended up being a random collection of thoughts and apologies.  Perhaps, I should cut myself some slack and just make my blog entries shorter.  I better stop while I’m ahead… more soon, I promise!
